Below the Falls

Below the falls, beside that wild
river, we found a quiet pool
big enough for two, and waded in,

But that was just a waking dream
we shared because the only real time
is this moment between dreams.

You said carpe diem and I seized
its slender waist where hips curved
like water flowing past a smooth rock

In that place where we bathe only once,
where those sweet waters have slipped
to the salty sea that accepts all rivers.

Old lovers reminiscing in the dark.
Against my hard protestations,
you said you really must be going.
