Somewhere Else

We’re good people around here.
Friendly.
Hard-working.
God-fearing.
We support the troops.
We know our neighbors.
We wave across the backyard fence.
They’re good people, too.
Our kids walk to school.
Junior plays the violin.
Shawna started soccer this year.
Every morning they say the Pledge
with right hands on their hearts
and study their spelling words
and learn long division
and state capitals.
Nothing like that could ever happen here.
Besides, our guns will protect us.
