brave red squirrel

brave red squirrel
making your living
under the old lilac bush
where you tunnel
through mountains of snow
to stash the seeds
you carry back
trip after trip
from beneath the bird feeder
where they are dropped
by chickadees and nuthatches
who prosper
from our largess

your big brown eyes
alert to the threat
of dogs and cats

we provide both your food
and mortal danger

what else could a squirrel
or a poet ask for

but spring?
