Willful Ignorance

I’m lying on the couch
listening to This American Life,
wearing Ira Glass’s glasses.

They’re talking about climate change
and the fires last summer
in Colorado, in Fort Collins

where we used to live,
a shimmering wall of fire
a mile long and 1000 feet high.

There are too many people
who refuse to believe, the skeptics
and the deniers and the godfearers

who might be wiser to fear man,
but it’s easier to ignore the facts
until it’s their house on fire.
