Sonnet of the “There Was Before; There Is After”

I could sail
over the edge of the known world
into a sea warm and salty
under clouds of wood smoke and incense
on a spring tide up the bay
between the thighs of a new land
to the river delta.

This was all a dream
apart from the oakrust and aspengold
and evergreen where everything split
as I drove Huronside
into autumn’s light rain

Before you opened the door between
the real you and the real me.
