Pencil Sonnet

Of course guns kill people
and pencils misspell words
and they can even poke your eye out
but usually only one eye at a time
before reloading, and so I cannot
support the right to carry
automatic pencils with lead clips
that can fire out sonnets 14 lines
per second with one trigger pull,
except of course in my case because
I’m a professional poet who always
carries his concealed pencil permit.
Is that a pencil in my pocket
or am I just happy to see you?
