Man and Crow in Winter

It was a fine day in the sun
for man and crow alike,

and even though I could not perch
in the top of a cottonwood tree

in perfect black silhouette
against the cerulean sky,

I cast a strong shadow,
black upon the white snow,

and when the crow cawed
I returned a hearty caw to him

in a voice that was throaty
and full of winter cheer.
