At the symposium, the scientists talk
about man’s impact on the environment
while the poet, sandwiched between
Dr. Geothermal and Dr. Solar Energy,
talks about the environment’s impact
on a man. He reads the one about cranes:

…a bird is just a bird – flyer, breeder,
omnivore, singer of summer sonatas;
and a man is just a man – walker, breeder,
omnivore, user of thumbs and fingers,
having his willful way with a wild world.

He is thinking about Smale’s paradox,
about how to turn a sphere inside out,
and how some people think the whole world
is contained within them, while others
can feel themselves falling through the belly
of the Universe, a sensation called Awe.
