Before the Flood

I described this pastoral scene a few years ago, a place so dull that nothing ever happens. Well, huge floods are happening, homes swept away, people drowned.

Blank-O

Blanco State Park
on the Blanco River
in Blanco, Texas
the Blanco County seat
pronounced blank-o
all.

Farm duck
red feathers behind his ear
and green shoulders
over plump whiteness.

Black steers in a field.
Live oak.
Green gray water
flowing east
with wind ripples
skimming west.

Shadows
of the far shore
under the blank old sky.
