Canada Is Burning

Canada is burning
the blue out of summer.
My fingers and teeth
are strawberry stained
so of course I am thinking of you,

words we shared,
old sadnesses bursting forth
like grief bulbs of irises
in flooded peat bogs,
like herons gliding on morning haze.
