bioluminescence

to wake in the night

and walk in cool sand

to the water’s edge rising

and falling like breathing

and see the wave-stirred green

of bioluminescent plankton

glowing like the aurora

to remind me that we

take something bright with us

wherever we venture or else

we find it there waiting, floating

or washed up on the tide
