Two Pockets

(Rabbi Simcha Bunim taught that every person has to have two pockets, and in each pocket they have to carry a different note. And the note in one pocket says the universe was created for me. And in the other pocket the note says I am just dust and ashes.)

I am naked; without pockets.

My left ear hears the songs
of birds long-flown south;

In my right ear the wind rattles
its tuneless litany.

Both my hands are encumbered
with life’s accumulated weight

So I cannot cover myself
before you; I stand exposed,

My balls just dust and ashes
and my penis points up or down

Aimlessly, because up or down,
Heaven or Hell, is all the same

To a non-believer.
