Field Notes for a Love Poem

It will have birds,
Sandhill cranes.

Not because they mate for life,
not exactly.

More for the great lengths
they go to,

the way they circle
wing to wing

calling to each other
in voices resonant.

The way they dance,
every year,

faithful to love
as surely birds feel it,

that calling
of the world from within.

This is my love poem
for you.

Yours will sound different.
Tree frogs

Or maybe herons.
